The exterior tensile structure of the Umbrella Tower proposes a functional veil that ties together upper slab overhangs for shading and lower protruding slabs for terraces and even exterior seating, a unifying gesture that ties together the various needs of a 21st century tower. Designed as a civic anchor, the tower isn’t merely a vertical presence but integrates into the community through a dynamic and inclusive podium. This space is conceived as a vibrant social hub, where a diverse range of activities—from cultural exchanges to concerts and public lectures can take place, enriching the urban fabric. The tension cables are then clad in a wooden lattice, a softer, more tangible material to interact with on each floor, creating a delicate balance between privacy and openness. On the ground level, the lattice holds in place the canopy above, a permeable boundary between the urban streetscape and the spaces within.

Each terrace offers moments of respite, framing panoramic views of the city below. These platforms serve as informal gathering spaces, encouraging interaction, creativity on the lower floors, and become light shelves on the upper floors where exterior habitation cannot occur, but where shading is necessary for the double height openings on the upper slabs. The design strategically fosters a sense of community and collaboration, where exchanges are organically nurtured. The office spaces exude a warm and inviting atmosphere, with wooden accents and atriums boasting spiral staircases to enhance productivity and collaboration. The plan provides a high degree of flexibility to build a resilient floor plate that can sustain a large variety of layouts within its office program. The flexible floor plates ensure that the office spaces can easily adapt to various configurations, offering a resilient infrastructure that supports a wide range of uses. This flexibility is key to the tower’s longevity, allowing it to evolve with the changing needs of its users and ensuring its adaptability to new future forms of work. The tower becomes not just a place of work but a vital contributor to new rhythms of life for both its occupants and passersby alike.
