MAISON JAPON

The project begins with a fascination for the dynamism of multi-tenant buildings in Tokyo where different universes are in close adjacency from one floor to another yet coexist in harmony. As a point of departure to re-create this condition, and with the complex nature of a project like Maison Japon, we looked at the four states of being: solid, liquid, gas and plasma. We decided to explore all four in a site that allows for our design story to unfold in layers.

OMASAKE BAR

“The Omasake Bar for us is liquid, like a solution with molecules in motion, captures the dynamism and fast-pace flowing condition of Tokyo streets. It negotiates between the high speed of contemporary Japanese culture with the clarity of Parisian classicism, defined by clarity of gesture, incorporating the weight, symmetry, and solidity of Parisian architectural blocks.”

This architectural composition, octagonal portals of varying metals, evokes the dynamism, fast-paced motion of Tokyo streets, like a tunnel transporting to another dimension. Yet, it is defined by clarity of gesture, incorporating the weight, symmetry, and solidity of Parisian architectural blocks.

Inside, the use of metals creates a form of reflectivity and allows the space to play off of itself, always changing as one moves through space. In contrast, fabrics and soft lighting contribute to a relaxed ambiance, a space of contemplation.

The interior layout is designed for a strong one point perspective, like a drawing of a primitive enfilade, enveloping guests in various lighting conditions and reflections, which accentuates the metallic surfaces, like inhabiting the ribcage of a fish, and at the same time revealing its reflective scales, an exquisite corpse serving as the spinal cord of the project.

SUSHI YOSHINAGA

“Sushi Yoshinaga, gaseous in state, freely moves and expands. It signifies for us the intangible magic of Sushi culture. Spirituality, flavors, aesthetics, and the appreciation of nature permeate the atmosphere.”

Sushi Yoshinaga reflects a synthesis of Japanese heritage and traditions, with a series of gates that evoque ancient temples, and homogeneous soft lighting that accentuates the artistry of the sushi presentation, an exaggeratedly even light that almost flattens the space. Upon entering, there is a sense of anticipation, and the chef becomes the focal point, framed within the space.

The wooden sushi bar becomes a central character of the stage, the layout wrapping around all sides, allowing guests to observe the artistry up close from varying angles. The entire space is bathed in a gentle glow emitted by delicate textile portals, where the space in between becomes more important than the solid frames. These portals, somewhere between the rigid grids of a tatami mat and the transcendent flow of Japanese folding screen doors, create a systematic framing of the spectacle, the precise gestures and artistic presentation of the chef.

The careful selection and curation of elements, the restrained material palette consisting solely of wood, fabric, and travertine, contribute to the creation of an environment that transports visitors to a subtle yet vibrant space, oscillating between contemporary art and antiquity. Somehow old in its tropes, their combination creates a fresh feeling of the new, balancing tradition with modern reinvention. Overall, this space offers a serene setting where visitors can fully indulge in the art of sushi, immersing themselves in an atmosphere that seamlessly combines the beauty of the tangible and the intangible.

TEA ROOM

The solid state, akin to a defined structure, was the framework to honor the enduring tradition of tea making. The strength of delineated shadows, the time-honored rituals that embody stability, providing a protective environment for the preservation of the tea ritual. Lastly, plasma, an energetic and ionized state of matter, was the starting point for the Karaoke’s dynamic realm and underworld condition. Electrifying at times, vibrant at others, it ignites a fusion of beings to fully express their inner dynamic energy.
